Dominicans came from behind again

MIAMI, Florida, June 27, 2009.- For second day in a row defending champions Dominican Republic had to come from behind to prevail in a match of the Eighth Women’s Pan American Cup. This time the victim was Canada by score of 23-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-21.

Dominican Milagros Cabral had 28 points with 26 attacks and two blocks, and Bethania de la Cruz added 19 including seven service aces. Prisilla Rivera Rivera charted 15 tallies and Lisvel Eve had seven blocks among her 10 points.

Tiffany Dodd and Brittney Page topped the Canadian attack with 14 and 12 points respectively.

“Our serves improved after the first set and suddenly the game changed for us,” said Marcos Kwiek, the coach of Dominican Republic. “Our blocking improved and also our overall defense. We still need to be more aggressive right from the start of the match and also improve our game on the fundamentals.”

“We played very well today and the girls played like wanted them to play,” said Arnd Ludwig, the Canadian coach. “We struggled against the serves of number 18 (De la Cruz) in sets three and four and it cost the match for us. If not for that, the result could have been in our favor.”
